After being associated with the state forest department for 20 years,Jagdish Prasad,Conservator of Forest,Vadodara Circle, has submitted his thesis titled People’s participation in forest conservation and development to the Department of Rural Economics at Gujarat Vidhyapeeth,Ahmedabad.

According to Prasad’s study, the objective of the forest management should be not only saving the environment but also addressing the socio economic concerns of the state.

Prasad recommends involvement of private sectors for rejuvenation of degraded forests.

He says the forests should be classified into protected and production divisions. “The protected forests should be managed by the wildlife wing of the forest department and in accordance with the guidelines of the Government of India while the production forests should be under the control of the territorial wing of the forest department and managed as per the rules of the state government department,” says Prasad.

He further says: “Community forest management is the goal. After due capacity building of local institutions, forest management should be handed over to local communities. The local community should be given powers along with the responsibility to manage forests independently.”
