The Indian Army has received a record 60,580 online registrations for its recruitment rally that is scheduled to begin at Sabar Sports Stadium at Himmatnagar on Thursday. This is more than twice the average footfalls that such rallies have recorded in the recent past, said defence officials.

“This is the highest number of registrations ever that the Indian Army has received in Gujarat. The previous high was seen at Patan where 41,000 youths had registered in February 2014,” said Wing Commander Abhishek Matiman, the defence spokesperson in the state.

Asked if Army’s recent surgical strikes along the Line-of-Control had any possible effect on the jump in registrations, Wing Commander Matiman said, “I am sure there has been some impact of the surgical strikes…. But there has been a steady growth in recruitment numbers during Indian Army’s recruitment rallies held in the state since 2014. On an average these rallies, that are held twice a year, see a footfall of about 30,000.”

Defence officials predicted that such huge turnout will also boost the number of selections from the state. “The highest number of youths to be selected from such rallies in Gujarat is 725. This too happened in Himmatnagar in March 2015, when 29,000 youngsters turned up,” the official added.

Owing to an “unprecedented” number of candidates having registered for the rally, the schedule has been split date-wise, catering to certain districts on a particular date. The highest number of youths who have registered for this rally are from north Gujarat. Banaskantha (8,037 registrations), Mehsana (5,983), Ahmedabad (5,736) and Sabarkantha (5,603) top the list of districts from where the youths have registered.

The rally is being conducted from December 8 to December 20 for soldier general duty, soldier clerks/storekeeper technician and soldier tradesmen (washerman, chef, dresser, etc), soldier technician (tech arms), soldier technician (aviation and ammunition examiner), soldier nursing assistant and religious teacher JCOs.
