Hindus and Muslims jointly funded the mass wedding of 25 Muslim couples in Godhra on Sunday, coinciding with the anniversary of the 2002 Godhra carnage.
The fast track court is still to pronounce the quantum of sentences for the 31 convicted in the Sabarmati Express fire, but organisers said that events as these will promote communal harmony in the town.
Muslim couples from the Panchmahals district and even Madhya Pradesh participated in the mass weddings.
Sadiq Tijoriwala,a member of the Godhra Samagra Muslim Samaj Samooh Lagan Committee, said: We raised about Rs 7.5 lakh from the donors, comprising both Hindus and Muslims, while couples paid Rs 3,000 each. The money was used to buy household goods for the couples. We had 15 donors from the Hindu community. We are holding the marriages for the past four years. But this year we wanted couples from across the district so that communal harmony is maintained.
The organisers themselves have shunned from political leanings, but local representatives of the Congress and BJP attended the weddings.
Among the donors was Sanjay Soni, who was recently elected BJP Councillor of Godhra Municipality (Ward no 10). He said: We have been organising these marriages so that the image about Godhra being communally sensitive,changes..
Lunawada Congress MLA Paranjayadityasinh Parmar said: I plan to take this to Santrampur next year. It has been happening here for four years now.
Tijoriwala said three riot victims were married in the mass marriages in previous years.
