Liquor has been flowing freely in Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of the state, according to statistics provided by the state government in the Assembly regarding the number of prohibition cases registered and the quantity of liquor seized in the last two years.
According to information given in reply to a question by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar,a total of 16,448 cases of prohibition were booked in Ahmedabad between June 1,2007 and May 31,2009.
Most of these cases are from Odhav,Amraiwadi,Kagdapeeth,Sardarnagar,Shaher Kotda,Meghaninagar and the Shahibaug police station areas.
It is from areas under Odhav,Amraiwadi and Kagdapeeth police stations that most of the recent hooch death cases were also reported.
The least number of cases were reported from Chandkheda,Kalupur,Sola,Naranpura,Gujarat University,Shahpur,Karanj,Dariapur,Rakhial,Vejaplur and Vastrapur police station areas.
Accordingly to the reply,as many as 29,488 raids were conducted by the police in the last two years to recover the illicit liquor brought in the city.
Again, majority of the raids were done in areas under Kagdapeeth,Amraiwadi,Odhav,Shaher Kotda and Meghaninagar areas.
A total of 13.45 lakh litres of country-made and 77,260 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were seized in these raids, indicating the volume of the contraband pushed into the city by bootleggers from different places outside the state.
The total value of the seized country liquor and IMFL was valued at Rs 1.78 crore.
According to police sources, the seized liquor is just a tip of the liquor smuggling racket.
The real amount of liquor that could not be seized, they said, might be several times the seized value.
