Even as the Gujarat government has spent over Rs 100 crore in organising Khel Mahakumbh – an annual sports competition – in the last two years, it has filled only 26 regular posts of coaches out of the total sanctioned posts of 198. This came out during the Question Hour of the Gujarat Assembly when Talala MLA raised a q Jashubhai Baraduestion on the sanctioned posts of coaches in the state.
Replying to the question, State Sports Minister Nanubhai Vanani said that there were 198 sanctioned posts of coaches in Gujarat. And out of them, 26 posts have been filled with regular coaches. Whereas, he added, 117 posts of coaches have been filled by ad hoc or fixed-salaried persons. This also leaves 55 vacant posts of coaches. Vanani has told the state Assembly that the process to fill the vacant posts is in progress.
In a separate question related to Khel Mahakumbh, Vanani has informed the Assembly that in 2012, more than 16.74 lakh players participated in the event. The same number of participants had increased significantly in 2013 with more than 31.44 lakh sports persons participating in the event.
In 2012, the state government had spent more than Rs 50.70 crore. The state’s expense on the event the next year was more than Rs 52.13 crore.
