A Dalit employee of the Udyog Bhavan in Gandhinagar allegedly committed suicide in his office toilet after he was allegedly humiliated by his senior and harassed by his colleagues for the last few months.

The family members of the deceased protested outside the civil hospital after the post-mortem on Tuesday and refused to accept his body till the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against three employees from Udyog Bhavan on Tuesday. The victim,Naresh Ganpat Chavda, was a clerk in industries commissionarate at Udyog Bhavan and a resident of Gandhinagar city.

The Gandhinagar police said that the incident happened late on Monday when Naresh was allegedly snubbed by his boss,Pathak, who is the General Manager of the division.

Naresh consumed a bottle of pesticide and was found lying on the floor near the toilet. His family rushed him to the Gandhinagar civil hospital. However,he was declared brought dead by doctors. The family found the suicide note from his office belongings late on Monday night.

Sector 7 police, that registered the FIR on Tuesday afternoon, said Naresh had alerted his family about the severe harassment at work. He was thinking of quitting, but his family urged him to hold on to his job.

Naresh’s brother,Raju Ganpat Chavda, who registered the FIR,stated that since his family was dependent on him,he continued to tolerate the harassment.

Gandhinagar SP,Sharad Singhal, said,“Naresh took the extreme step after he couldn’t bear the insult. He was slapped two-three times in front of his office staff by his boss. We have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Pathak,Shah and Vakil.”

Singhal added that since Chavda was a Dalit, his case was transferred to the SC/ST cell that will conduct a detailed probe. If found guilty, the three accused will be also arrested after the SC/ST cell’s inquiry. State government spokesperson Nitin Patel said,“We will do an inquiry after the police investigation gets over.”
