A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has alleged that in the residential zones of Raipur,Khadia and Manekchowk areas of Ahmedabad,a number of factories and furnaces of goldsmiths and silversmiths have been using hazardous chemicals, dumping them in gutter or burying them under the ground.

Acting on the petition,a division bench of Gujarat High Court Thursday issued notice to the state government,Ahmedabad Police Commissioner and Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner while posting the matter for further hearing on next week.

The petitioner has been identified as Bhavik Shah. According to the petitioner, the goldsmiths and silversmiths melt gold and silver using acid and “surokhar” which are hazardous chemicals.

These chemicals, the petitioner has stated, are harmful to the local community but its use has gone unchecked by the authorities.

According to Shah, the owners of these factories and furnaces use these chemicals only during night hours and early morning hours to avoid detection.

The petition was heard by a division bench of HC comprising Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala.
