The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday stayed till June 23 eviction of hawkers and vendors and any fresh construction at the Gurjari market near Ellisbridge here by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) without the court’s permission.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya and Justice J B Pardiwala passed an order to this effect while acting on a Public Interest Litigation filed by a professor,Navdeep Mathur,of the Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad (IIM-A).
According to Mathur’s lawyer,Utpala Bora,the market is 600-year-old and it is like heritage of the city. Around 1,200 people are permanent members of the market while around 1,000 others are also earning their livelihood here for many years.
Bora said that as part of the Sabarmati River Front Development Project,AMC has decided to reconstruct the the place with 615 constructed stalls for as many vendors. “Our contention is that the AMC cannot decide the number of hawkers and vendors unilaterally. And therefore,we have challenged the move to rehabilitate and resettle 615 persons only at the Gurjari market area,” she said.
“We have demanded to cover all those persons who have been earning their livelihood at the market at present,” she added.
Further hearing has been kept on June 23.
