A single-judge bench of Justice S R Brahmbhatt at the High Court on Thursday ordered to put senior IPS officer Satish Verma’s petition related to the 1996-97 alleged fake encounters and custodial deaths in Porbandar before the Chief Justice of HC for passing an order.

Justice Brahmbhatt’s order came after the Gujarat government and the complainant in the matter objected to his bench conducting the hearing on technical grounds. The court, though, has ordered a stay on any inquiry against Verma till then.

Verma had filed a petition before the court to recall the order of another bench of HC in April last year which ordered Gujarat Police to conduct an inquiry into the alleged deaths in Porbandar when Verma was posted there as superintendent of police .

The petition, adjourned till after the summer vacation on May 9,was being heard by Justice Brahmbhatt on Thursday. However, the counsels for the state government contended that since Verma’s petition sought a recall of the order passed by another bench earlier, only that bench could decide the matter.

The bench subsequently ordered to put the petition before the Chief Justice of the HC to pass an appropriate order on which bench would hear the petition.
