The Gujarat Vidyapith Governing Council on Wednesday unanimously decided to appoint Dr Anamik Shah as its new vice chancellor. Dr. Shah is currently a senior professor in the Department of Chemistry of the Saurashtra University at Rajkot.
Confirming the development, Vidyapith registrar Rajendra Khimani said that Shah’s name was unanimously cleared by all the members of the council. Khimani said that Vidyapith would formally communicate to Shah about the varsity’s decision and invite him to join the institution as its VC.
“I am happy about the decision. I am waiting for a formal invitation from vidyapith authorities,” Shah said.
The appointment of a new VC was necessitated as incumbent VC Sudershan Iyengar has completed more than nine years in three terms. Iyengar was appointed in 2005. Vidyapith was established in 1920 by Mahatma Gandhi.
Shah has been teaching organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, environmental chemistry and pharma-analytical chemistry at the Saurashtra University since 1983. He has worked on 14 national and international research projects including some from USA and The Netherlands and guided more than 50 students for pursuing Ph.D in diversified field of chemistry.
He is also currently running research programmes of more than Rs. 8 crores of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, National Institute of Health(NIH)-USA on diversified field of medicinal chemistry research on anti-HIV, anti-cancer and anti-tubercular drug discovery.
