Gujarat tops the country in the production of solar energy with as much as 80 per cent of the electricity generated in India coming from the state government's solar rooftop scheme Surya Gujarat, Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai stated in the Assembly Monday. Anand district alone has 10,284 power consumers registered under the solar rooftop scheme with a total power capacity of 39,911 KW, the minister said. As many as 8,595 electricity consumers have generated 3,51,148 KW of power in two years as on December 31, 2022, thereby saving Rs 7.37 crore. Similarly, 8,723 consumers have been registered in Bharuch district with an electricity capacity of 39,941 KW. Nearly 7,200 consumers have generated 21.35 lakh units of electricity from Surya Gujarat in Bharuch, thereby saving Rs 4.35 crore. 'Surya Gujarat' for the residential areas was launched in August 2019. Desai said not only has the electricity bills been reduced, the excess power generated is being purchased by discoms at a rate of Rs 2.25 per unit, greatly benefiting the consumers. The government gives 40 per cent subsidy for up to 3 KW and 20 per cent subsidy up to 10 KW of power in residential areas under the scheme, Desai said. The subsidy is not eligible for usage above 10 kilowatts.
