Gujarat plays chess,checks into Guinness

Gujarat today created a new world record for most number of chess games played simultaneously at a single venue,with 20,486 players coming together to test their skills at the Gujarat University ground here.

20,486 players come together to test their skills at Gujarat University ground and beat four-year-old Mexican record

Gujarat today created a new world record for most number of chess games played simultaneously at a single venue,with 20,486 players coming together to test their skills at the Gujarat University ground here. The state broke the record created by Mexico in 2006 when 13,346 players had played together at a similar event.

A Guinness certificate was presented to the state Youth and Culture Department Secretary,Bhagyesh Jha,by Guinness Book of World Records representative Tarika Vara.

Another important feat achieved on the occasion was the participation of 140 visually impaired players,under experts’ guidance. There were no visually impaired players when the record was created in Mexico.

Chess world champion Viswanathan Anand,who was the guest of honour,described the event as extremely “amazing”. He said Chief Minister Narendra Modi had expressed to him his desire to hold the biggest world chess event in the state a year ago. “I am happy that his dream has become a reality today,with Gujarat holding a historic event bringing laurels to the state as well as the country,” said Anand.

Congratulating the participants,Modi said with today’s record,India has now broken 300 world records. He appealed to the participants to train at least five others so that the game reaches every house in the state.

He further said that during the ongoing Gujarat Golden Jubilee celebrations,the state has created several other records. It beat Pakistan in planting maximum number of saplings in one day,while a record 14 lakh people participated in Khel Mahakumbh and 50 lakh in Vanche Gujarat programme.
