Gujarat local body polls: Exit of local leaders may have hit results, says Gohil

Following the Congress’s dismal performance in the local bodies’ elections, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Shaktisinh Gohil said the party could have suffered the setbacks because of the leaders that quit.

“It is commendable that our senior leaders, workers and candidates fought this election in spite of the BJP’s many undemocratic conspiratorial ways. In the last election, Congress won only one seat in the Junagadh Municipal Corporation and this time, 11 of our corporators have won. In that context the results are not as disappointing,” he said.

“The results on many seats of Jafrabad, Lathi and Rajula are disappointing. Nagar Palika elections are fought on the shoulders of local leaders, and our local leaders Ambrish Der, Jawahar Chavda, Harshad Ribadiya (all ex-MLAs) and other leaders left (the party) and this could be responsible for the setback in the Nagarpalika elections. In Salaya municipality, BJP used various tactics like intimidation; yet, Congress candidates won while none of the 12 BJP candidates could win,” he added.
