Months before Gujarat goes to polls, the Narendra Modi government has decided to launch a campaign in 11 tribal districts of the state to spread awareness about its “developmental initiatives”.

From August 1 to August 31,vans equipped with huge screens will drive into tribal villages and show a film on the schemes and programmes launched by the government in the last 10 years.

Besides, booklets highlighting the same initiatives will be distributed in the villages of Banaskantha,Sabarkantha,Panchmahals,Dahod,Vadodara,Bharuch,Narmada,Surat,Tapi,Navsari and Valsad districts, officials said on Sunday.

Dahod district collector J M Luni told The Indian Express,“We have selected 420 major villages of the district where the film will be screened and officials of the state information department will distribute literature. The objective of the campaign is to spread awareness about developmental initiatives and achievements of the government. There will be special focus on schemes for the welfare of tribals.”

He said the film will also be shown at weekly village markets and that the information bureau will hold small exhibitions wherever the van goes.

The campaign will be run by the information bureaus in respective districts. Collectors will monitor the drive and later send feedback to the government.

Vadodara district collector Vinod Rao said,“This is an attempt to reach out to tribals and make them aware of the schemes they can avail of,to make them aware of their rights and privileges.”

The government has hired the services of a private firm from Maharashtra to provide the audio- and video-equipped vans.

“Each district will get a van with LED screen and DVD of the film. The van will visit seven to eight villages every day. Officials of our department will distribute books, booklets and pamphlets on various schemes and achievements of the government,” said a senior official at the regional information office,Vadodara.

Officials said that Dahod and Valsad will get an additional van each to cover the larger areas of the twin districts, adding that the information bureaus will get the special vans on Monday.

Incidentally,Chief Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend a function at Mangadh in the Panchmahals district on Monday to pay tribute to tribals who are said to have laid down their lives fighting the British rule.
