Fake court busted in Gujarat, man arrested for impersonating arbitrator for 5 years

Maurice Samuel Christian After fake government offices in the state made headlines, a fake arbitration court has been busted in Gujarat.
Maurice Samuel Christian, a Gandhinagar resident, was arrested on Monday for allegedly impersonating an arbitrator and passing bogus awards (orders) in the favour of clients in land related matters, said Ahmedabad Police. He allegedly operated the fake court for five-and-a-half years in Ahmedabad before it was shut down by police on the basis of a complaint from a local court.
An FIR, filed at Karanj police station in Ahmedabad on the basis of a complaint filed by Hardik Sagar Desai, Registrar of the City Civil Court in Bhadra, Ahmedabad, alleged that the accused had participated in a criminal conspiracy.
The FIR states that Christian represented himself as an arbitrator in case of a petitioner Thakor Babuji Chhanaji in spite of not having an Arbitration Contract and not possessing any powers to adjudicate over matters of conflict resolution under The Arbitration and Conciliation Act of 1996.
Christian had kept up this charade between March 2, 2019 and October 21, 2024. The accused allegedly illegally passed “an award” (order) in the matter between the petitioner and the Collector of Ahmedabad, and presented the claim and the statement before a court on March 30, 2019, said police.The FIR states that this was done in an effort to falsely take over the possession of a government-owned land.

A police statement said that the modus operandi was that Christian would pass awards in favour of his clients in his fake arbitrator court and then present these bogus claims in court to give illicit benefit to his clients. Christian had been earlier booked for fraud.
