Amid heavy rainfall in Surat and South Gujarat, two people have died of electric shocks over the last 24 hours. The downpour has stranded vehicles and disrupted travel, leaving many residents struggling to navigate the flooded streets.

Mahendra Bahadur Gore (32), a resident of the Palanpur Jakatnaka area and a native of Nepal, was wading through waist-level water in the Sarjan Row House society with his friend on Sunday night when he came in contact with a live wire hanging from an electric pole. He died on the spot.

Mahendra’s brother-in-law Prem Thapa Bahadur informed the police and brought the body to New Civil Hospital where a post-mortem was carried out on Monday. A case of accidental death was lodged.

On Monday, 21-year-old factory worker Shabuddin Maulvi, a resident of Unn, was filling a water bottle on the first floor of Hojiwala Industrial estate in the Bhestan area when he was electrocuted. He was rushed to the New Civil hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

In another incident, the Surat fire department in Katargam’s Rashi circle rescued four of a family who were trapped in a car. They were identified as Urvin (47), his wife Ruta (43) and their two daughters. At Vesu, another vehicle, an ambulance carrying a dead body, was recovered from the flooded roads on the same day.

Fire officials received several complaints regarding uprooted trees (over 45 calls) and short-circuits.

The rain briefly stopped at night, but it continued to pour on Monday. Students and job-goers struggled to commute on Monday morning, even as rainwater seeped into houses in low-lying areas.
