A FARMER COUPLE consumed poison and allegedly committed suicide in Mayadhar village in Bhavnagar district on Tuesday. The police claimed that the reason was marital discord.

Bhanubhai Dangar (50) and his wife Devkuben consumed poison at their home at 3:30 AM on Tuesday. They were rushed to a government hospital at Talaja where Bhanubhai died during treatment. Devkuben was refereed to Sir Takhtasinhji General Hospital in Bhavnagar city. But she too died while receiving treatment, police said.

While local news channels reported that the couple ended their lives due to crop failure, police said domestic quarrel was the real reason.”
Bhanubhai was among better farmers in the village and was even lending money to others. So, the interviews of his relatives on TV channels ascribing the suicides to crop failure are wrong. Primary investigation has revealed that the couple had long-standing differences.

They had a quarrel early this morning leading to the suicide,” Palitana Rural police sub-inspector B K Khachar said. Mayadhar is a village in Palitana taluka of Bhavnagar. Police have filed a case of accidental death and started investigation.
