Gujarat confidential: Modi’s last-minute no-show

Even the pleading by a BJP MLA from Mehsana could not convince Chief Minister Narendra Modi to attend the mass marriage ceremony organised by the Samast Kshatriya Thakore Samaj in the district on Thursday. Modi had earlier agreed to be present at the ceremony and give blessings to the couples. However, the organisers, three of them BJP MLAs,were left high and dry when the CM changed his mind. The organisers could not figure out what made Modi change his mind. For the ceremony, which had some Muslim donors, the organisers spent more than they could afford to make it suitable for the CM’s visit. They got the invites, running into five pages, printed on glossy paper and apparently spent Rs 5 lakh to erect a dome, especially to impress the special guest. But for those who looked forward to having Modi at the ceremony,it was a no-show.

state it model for karnataka

Bangalore may be one of the biggest Information Technology (IT) hubs in India. And Gujarat may be lagging behind in attracting IT companies to invest in the state. But the Karnataka Election Commission fully relied on Gujarat for Web casting in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The Karnataka EC studied the model of Gujarat EC,which had successfully used Web casting from all booths in December 2012 elections (all booths were covered for the first time by any state),and replicate the same. Now,other states also have made a beeline to know how Gujarat effectively made use of the BSNL network, along with roping in private service providers,to go about such a technologically challenging task on a such a large scale.

united,they stand

Following Narendra Modi’s call for unity among the cadre seems to have worked. Saurashtra strongman Vitthal Radadia, instead of accompanying his son Jayesh who filed nomination for the June 2 bypoll from Jetpur seat on Tuesday, escorted Pravin Makadia, who filed nomination for Dhoraji Assembly seat that Radadia had earlier won. That sent a message to voters that Radadia, the former Congress leader, was now firmly behind the BJP candidate. And when Radadia filed his nomination for Porbandar Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday,Irrigation and Agriculture Minister and Porbandar MLA Babu Bokhiria skipped the Cabinet meeting to be with him. Also, though he wanted to contest from Dhoraji Assembly seat, which he had been holding since 1990,he opted for Porbandar Lok Sabha seat as per Modi’s wish. This despite the fact that Porbandar will go to polls in 2014 again.

In the last couple of days, what transpired in the the BJP Information Technology Cell finally led to the resignation of a 23-year old biotechnology student,Prathesh Patel, who has been running Narendramodin-ugujarat(Narendra Modi’s Gujarat) page on Facebook for almost two years now. Given the popularity of the page and the groups floated by him,Patel was invited and made the convener of Gandhinagar IT unit by the BJP IT cell top members.

But things took a turn when Patel’s interview appeared in a leading national magazine recently. According to sources, the BJP IT Cell, whose members are also contributing to Modi’s official portal, could not digest the fact that a youth was getting much publicity from outside and not them. So Patel was made to resign as the Gandhinagar IT Cell convener. “In the past two days,I have closed all the pages and groups on Modi,” said Patel.

‘logo’motive @cept

The alumni and the extended student community of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) recently took the Facebook route to lash out against the change of logo of the 50-year-old institute calling it “an injustice”.

Aghast at the autocratic way with which the new director Bimal Patel has been imposing a flurry of changes in the institute, the disgruntled alumni and student community took to criticising the new order online.

A post on an unofficial Facebook page run by the CEPT alumni read: “We can only share the grief of having to accept a mediocre typeface as the official logo of a multifaceted design university.”

While insiders say the new logo, lacking in any design element, has been fashioned by two students, the director insists that the new version is ‘minimalistic’ and was rustled up by the faculty.

Online angst boiled to such a point that a CEPTian fashioned a new acronym for the institute:”Corporate Enterprise of Policymaking and Traumatiaation”.
