Span No.9 of the bridge across the Bhadar river broke into two and collapsed at around 12 am on Wednesday, officials of National Highway Division of Roads and Building Department of Gujarat said.

Officials said traffic had to be diverted on other roads.

“The bridge collapsed as a truck passed on it. However, the truck just managed to cross the river, therefore no injury or casualty has been reported. We have diverted vehicular traffic from Madhupur to Kutiyana via Mayari,” in-charge police superintendent of Porbandar district, Mahesh Jadeja said.

A team of senior officials of National Highway Division had rushed to the site for inspection. “The bridge was around 25 year old and required some reinforcement work. Tenders have been floated and work of grouting and guniting the bridge was to start in a month,” an official of the NH Division, who was present at the site of the accident said.

The bridge collapse also affected telecommunication services. “Our long-distance cable connecting Porbandar to Mangrol in Junagadh was snapped with the collapse of the bridge. This partially affected telephone, mobile and internet services in Porbandar and Junagadh. But the line was partially restored soon through our ring network of Mangrol-Junagadh-Porbandar. The cable was repaired by 4 pm,” Dhana Ram, divisional engineer of Western Telecome Region of BSNL said.

Incidentally, NH8E Extension is part of the project of a coastal highway which runs along the coastline of of Gujarat, beginning from Bhavnagar and ending at Dwarka. National Highway Authority of India is presently conducting a feasibility survey to widen the highway and make it a a four-lane road.
