The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials in Surat on Saturday arrested a Class I officer of Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), Circle Officer of Kamrej Taluka Panchayat and his assistant on bribery charges.
In the first case, the ACB officials had received an information that GPCB officer Rajesh Patel has been collecting bribes from different industries in Palsana GIDC and was on his way to Ahmedabad on Saturday. The ACB team intercepted Patel’s car on NH-8 at Jambuva junction near Vadodara. The team then frisked his car and found a bag containing Rs 1.50 lakh cash. He was arrested immediately and booked under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, as per ACB sources.
In the second incident, the ACB received a tip-off that government officials of Kamrej Taluka Panchayat in Surat district have been demanding bribe from people for any kind of work. Acting on the information, ACB officials laid a trap and sent a person at Kamrej Taluka Panchayat office with an application for carrying out some land related work.
The person met Circle Officer Kanaiyalal Patel at the panchayat office, where he demanded Rs 1.50 lakh from the person. The ACB had sent their man to the panchayat office with the same amount, and when he was about to give Patel the bribe money, he asked him to hand over the cash to his assistant Atul Limbachiya. ACB officials, who were waiting outside the panchayat office, then immediately swung into action and arrested Limbachiya with the bribe money. Patel, who tried to escape seeing the ACB officials, was also arrested. The duo were booked under
sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
In another incident, Income Tax officer in Vapi Ravindra Bokade was booked for demanding bribe from a finance firm owner. As per ACB sources, the firm owner had received a notice from Vapi Income Tax department to come to its office and explain a transaction of Rs 20 lakh through his company’s bank account. The complainant then went to the I-T office and met Bokade. The I-T officer then allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh from the complainant to hush up the matter. The complainant bargained with Bokade and the bribe amount was settled at Rs 1.55 lakh.
The complainant then contacted the ACB office at Valsad and lodged a complaint against Bokade on Friday. On Saturday, the ACB laid a trap wherein the complainant went to meet Bokade at his office with the bribe amount. When Bokade arrived near the I-T building in his car, he asked the complainant to come in. The complainant then handed over the brime amount and came out of the car. Sensing something amiss, Bokade started the engine of his car and drove away. An ACB constable who tried to stop the car was injured. The injured ACB cop Kishorbhai was rushed to a nearby hospital. Surat ACB has lodged a complaint under attempt to murder against Bokade.
ACB police inspector B K Vanar said, “We chased the car of I-T officer but he drove fast and escaped.”
