The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Gujarat has initiated a probe of disproportionate assets against 51 government officials, including 16 linked to the Bhavnagar dummy candidate racket case, following preliminary complaints and inputs received by the department, an official release stated Wednesday.

“Nearly 70 per cent” of the 51 government officials under the scanner are already facing bribery charges with proceedings ongoing, said ACB director Anupam Gahlaut. The disproportionate assets inquiries will be separate from the bribery proceedings.

The scrutiny can take up to two to three months, Gahlaut added.

According to ACB, it recently prepared a list of alleged corrupt government officials and employees from different departments of the government. There was a special vigilance on them.

The probe followed inputs against 35 officials on possession of disproportionate assets. Of the 35, four are Class 1 officials, 12 from Class 2, and 19 are Class-3 level.

The 35 officials include those from the departments of urban development and urban rural housing department, energy and petrochemical department, home department, panchayat and rural housing department, revenue department, ports and transport department, health and family welfare department, education department, finance department, food and civil supplies department , agriculture and farmers welfare department, and Narmada and water resources department.

Apart from the 35, 16 other officials who were involved in the Bhavnagar dummy candidate racket case have been primarily found to be in possession of disproportionate assets. Uncovered in April, the case involves dummy candidates being sent to appear in government recruitment examinations and board examinations on behalf of aspirants from Bhavnagar district.
