GSHSEB to teach moral values to Class X students

IN an attempt to inculcate moral values among students in the state,the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) under School-Based Comprehensive Evaluation (SCE) is all set to introduce values such as honesty,compassion,leadership,nationalism and cooperation as part of the Class X curriculum.

Not only these values will be taught through books referred by the board as a part of their curriculum,but special lectures will be arranged for students during morning assembly hours. The draft committee has suggested to evaluate these values in the form of grades. To be introduced in Class X from 2013-14,these would constitute a part of co-scholastic areas.

“Since the board has shifted to school-based comprehensive evaluation system in Class IX in 2011,on the basis of feedback taken from students and teachers and later analysed by experts,the importance for required values,attitudes and skills necessary for a student’s development was realised. In teaching values,all the accepted qualities of truth,love,courage,trust and honesty are included along with other social qualities like self-confidence,leadership,civility,patriotism,co-operation and mercy,” said GSHSEB chairman R R Varsani.

The board officials further added that unlike CBSE,the GSHSEB will not only teach moral science to the students but also life skills. Six life skills has also been included in the Class X curriculum. These include,health,stress,time,environmental,communication and financial management skill.

“These are some of the essential components of life. For instance,a student should know basics of financial management which he can use later in life,” added Varsani.

The positive changes noted while observing the values will be indicated by special indicators and at the end of the term,grading on a three point scale (from grade A to C) is to be used. A student will be awarded A grade if there are eight or more indicators,B if there are three to seven and C in case there are less than three indicators.
