Compared to last year, pass percentage drops by 2%,to 66.51%.

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) Class XII general stream results declared on Monday recorded a pass percentage of 66.51%,a drop by two per cent compared to last year.

This stands in sharp contrast with 92.53% pass percentage in the science stream, the results for which were declared last month.

The pass percentage of English-medium students dropped considerably from 85% to 77% while the pass percentage for Gujarati-medium students witnessed a slight decline from 67.80 to 66.30%.

Even as girls outperformed the boys with a pass percentage of 75.96,15% more than the boys, the female pass percentage also dropped by 2 per cent.

Also, the number of schools with 100% result dropped from 199 to 65,along with a fall in the number of students in top two grades-A1 and A2- from 107 to 92 (A1) and 6846 to 6602 (A2).

Commenting on the results,GSHSEB chairman RR Varsani said,“There is no denying the fact that the result has witnessed a decline. Among other reasons, one is the increase in number of students in both regular and open categories this year. Another is the strict supervision during examinations that did not allow unfair practices. Though these are assumptions, actual reasons will be known after some evaluation.”

However, contrary to the Chairman’s claims of strict supervision and decline in the number of unfair means cases (UMC),the number of such cases reported doubled this year with 82 UMC being reported as opposed to 39 last year.

Of the 5,23,132 students enrolled in general, vocational and basic streams,3,44,938 cleared the examination, showing an increase of nearly 88,000 students as compared to last year. While, the number of students enrolled in open school board was 78,624,the pass percentage was 50% with 38,071 students clearing the examination.
