Govt starts repair work at Vasana barrage for a flowing Sabarmati

The entire project has been tendered to three private parties through tendering.

In order to have a flowing Sabarmati May onwards eyeing tourists and visitors at the Sabarmati riverfront during summer vacations,the Gujarat Water Resources Department in association with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is carrying out a massive repair work of Vasana barrage water gates.

For the first time ever since the construction of Vasana barrage in 1975,such a massive repair work of as much as 18 water gates (at one go) started from Sunday,leaving the Sabarmati riverbed dry. The first phase of the project,estimated at a cost of Rs 2.05 crore,will continue till third week of December while the second phase is slated to commence in February. The project has a deadline of March,2014. The entire project has been tendered to three private parties through tendering.

“Out of total 30 gates at Vasana barrage,in 2012 six gates were repaired and this year till June,another six. So,repair work of remaining 18 gates at one go will be undertaken during this time of the year,” said P C Vyas,superintendent engineer at Ahmedabad Irrigation Project Circle,Gujarat Water Resources Departmen.

During the repair work that leaves the riverbed dry,the AMC is carrying out the cleaning process. “Due to this repair work during this time of the year,for the first time,that the water will be filled in May this year,so riverbed cleaning is being done,especially near the bridges which are more prone to garbage,” said AMC city engineer Tarun Lad.

“Normally,the canal cater to the irrigation in January,February and March but the rabi season irrigation will be closed this year. Permission was given by the farmers for closing the canal. Even they understand that it is in their benefit only,” Vyas said.
