In one of the largest land acquisition drives in the state,the Gujarat government will acquire 2,000 hectares of land in Sanand,the emerging automobile hub of the country,for industrial development.
This land acquisition will be the biggest ever to happen in Sanand,after Tata Nano set up shop in 2009. It will also make Sanand the second biggest Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in terms of land area in the state. Dahej with over 9,000 hectares of land is the largest industrial cluster under the GIDC banner.
The acquisition will be done by GIDC and a notification for the same has been issued a few days ago. A total of 2,000 hectares of land will be acquired in Sanand. This will be adjacent to the 2,100 hectares of land that has already been acquired by the GIDC, said a top government official.
The acquisition is being done keeping the future developments in mind. Sanand will go on to become a manufacturing and engineering hub, the official said,adding,The planned acquisition which is expected to begin only after state Assembly elections and will cover several villages.
Sanand as an industrial cluster came into limelight when Tata Motors choose the town,situated a few kilometres outside Ahmedabad for setting up their Nano car plant. Even by conservative estimates,investments to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore have already been promised in and around Sanand,post-Nano, the official added.
The move to acquire more land in Sanand comes at a time when there is a huge demand from industries to set up shops in the location which not only shares proximity to Ahmedabad,but lies on the DMIC corridor with easy access to the finest ports of the country. Today,Sanand is one of the prime industrial zones in the country. It is one of the most well-planned and affordable locations for industries, said Nirav Kothary,head of industrial real-estate of global property consultants,Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL).
The demand for land in this industrial cluster has been so much that GIDC increased the land prices in the industrial cluster of Sanand by 20 per cent in April this year. Currently the land rates stand at Rs 3,225 per square metre making the Sanand GIDC among the most expensive GIDCs in Gujarat.
According to state government sources,about 40 per cent of the 2,100 hectares of land acquired initially in Sanand has already been allotted to various industries.
Among the Sanand projects that have been cleared recently by the state government include a snacks and confectionery unit of Swiss company Nestle India,a greenfield facility of Colgate Palmolive,projects of Hyundai Engineering,Hitachi Hi-Rel,Tbea,Corning,Allied Minerals and Bosch. Land has also been allotted to automobile companies like Ford and Peugeot.
