Governor sets up three-member panel to probe into appointment of SU registrar

Governor Dr Kamla Beniwal, who is also the chancellor of Bhavnagar University.

Governor Dr Kamla Beniwal, who is also the chancellor of Bhavnagar University, has set up an inquiry committee to probe into the appointment of Saurashtra University registrar Gajendra Jani.

The three-member team was formed after local Congress leaders, who are also members in Senate and Syndicate at SU,complained of the irregularities in the appointment of the registrar.

The committee, which has been asked to submit a report within three months, consists of retired Gujarat High Court judge L A Pathan, former state additional secretary J D Mahida and UGC undersecretary Narayan Singh.

Sources said Senate members Nidat Barot and Mahesh Chauhan,Syndicate member Dharam Kambaliya have questioned Jani’s eligibility to hold the post. They have also raised a finger at the functioning of a committee consisting of vice-chancellor and pro vice-chancellor .

Jani was appointed on May 3,2007. Question against his eligibility has been raised by the Congress for more than a year now.

As per the qualification documents produced by Jani,he has done LLB from a Porbandar college in 1999-2003. During the same period (1999-2001),he has produced the certificate for Masters in Social Work. Besides,he has produced a five-year work experience certificate as Chief Executive Officer in Gitanjali College in 1999-2000.

“Double master degree certificate and an experience certificate produced by Jani are very doubtful. LLB is a full-time course. To and fro distance between Rajkot and Porbandar is around 500 km. How did Jani manage to do a full-time course at Porbandar along with master degree programme at SU. In the same period,he held an executive post at a college in Rajkot,” said Kambaliya.

For the post of registrar, candidate should have clear a master degree with more than 55 per cent and 10 years of teaching experience at any government college.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Kamlesh Joshipura has been on leave and not available for the comment.

Sources said the Governor will also seek an opinion from Senate and Syndicate on the inquiryreport before taking the final decision.
