Retired government employee awarded 4-year jail term in 16-year-old graft case in Gujarat
Defence lawyer U G Desai had urged the court to be lenient on Dhanji Parmar considering his advanced age and health condition.
The ACB officials prepared a chargesheet against Parmar on July 30, 2008. The trial in the case started in August 2015. The Surat district court Friday sentenced a retired government employee in his seventies to four years in prison in a 16-year-old graft case. The senior citizen has also been told to pay a penalty of Rs 25,000 or undergo an additional month of jail term.
The convict, Dhanji Parmar, now 73, was caught red-handed accepting a bribe while serving as the maintenance surveyor under the Surat City Survey Superintendent’s office at Mahuvej village in Mandvi taluka of Surat district.
One Suresh Rupareliya, a resident of Nana Varachha in Surat, had complained to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) that Parmar was seeking a Rs 10,000 bribe to enter his name in government records after he purchased an industrial plot in Tarsadi village of Mangrol taluka in Surat district in 2008.
