Ghatlodia tense after temple demolition

Tension prevailed in the Ghatlodia area of Ahmedabad on Tuesday following two separate incidents of violence in the late hours on Monday.

Tension prevailed in the Ghatlodia area of Ahmedabad on Tuesday following two separate incidents of violence in the late hours on Monday. Now adequate arrangement for high-level security has been made to maintain peace in the area.

The locals,irked at the news of the demolition of Jogni Mataji’s temple in the area,gathered in large numbers late on Monday. The police had to lob tear gas shells to disburse the mob. Some people were reported to have been injured in the scuffle.

According to the police,the temple is located between the Sattadhar crossroad and Bhuyangdev Road. Around 500 people who had gathered to protest against the demolition reportedly pelted stones and blocked the roads. When Ghatlodia police failed to control the situation,more police personnel were called from the city police department to control the situation.

In another incident of violence at Ghatlodia,two communities clashed after a girl from one community was allegedly teased and reportedly molested. The police have registered cases against both communities.

The police have said that the girl was from a Patel community and was walking near her residence at Prabhat Colony when a man from the Rabari community reportedly teased her and then molested her.

The incident led to the violence between the two communities.

The violence later spread to other parts of the area in which shops,tea stalls,and other establishments were damaged. Two people were seriously injured in the violence. The police have registered cross complaints filed by Patels and Rabaris.

The police said the situation in the area is still tense.
