The girl students of Gandhi Vidyapeeth at Vedchhi in Tapi district have accused the college’s principal in-charge and a professor of sexually harassing a few of them.

According to the details received,a second-year student of Bachelor of Rural Studies was allegedly pqhysically harassed by professor Jayanti Patel a few days ago. After maintaining silence on the issue for some days, she discussed the matter with her fellow students, who confirmed there have been similar complaints against Patel and principal Dewa Ahir on an earlier occasions also.

On Wednesday, the students residing in the girls’ hostel in the college premises went on a hunger strike to register their protest against the issue and the college authorities. They demanded that Ahir and Patel be removed from their posts with immediate effect.

Next day,the college management met the agitating students, and the latter told them that Ahir regularly visited their hostel late at night. After the management assured them of taking up the matter with the parent university — Veer Narmada South Gujarat University — the students called off their strike. The parents of several students also gathered at the college after learning about the incident and demanded action against the accused principal and professor.

Veer Narmada South Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Babu Prajapti said that a committee will soon be constituted to look into the allegations. Prajapti said,“At present,it is premature to say anything (on the allegations). We will form a committee, and its members will visit the college. It will submit the report to me and we will take action accordingly.”

Ahir, meanwhile, denied the charges, saying the allegations were “baseless and false”. “I suspect it’s a work of some people who are against me. They are misleading the students,as they want me to leave the job. I have some shocking details of the activities being carried out in the college premises. One day I will put it before the public,” he added.

The president of college trust,Amarsinh Z Choudhary (an ex-MP),said,“I feel the internal dispute between professors might have led to the incident. We will investigate into the charges.”

He added: “We have been demanding from the state Education ministry for long to appoint a full time principal, but nothing has happened so far. We will definitely take action if anybody is found guilty. This institution has its importance as it follows the Gandhian ideology.”
