Laxman Patel, the sitting BJP legislator from Gandevi taluka of Navsari district, was on Friday booked for violating the Model Code of Conduct by distributing cash among locals during a function held on March 23.
Nodal Officer Himanshu Parikh has lodged a complaint against him with the Gandvei police station.
According to sources in the police,Lok Dayro,a function of tribals, was organised by the Adivasi Vikas Trust near Satimata temple at Gandevi. The purpose of this function was to raise funds to meet the expenses of a mass marriage ceremony scheduled for 10 May.
Several people participated in the function, including Patel and his son Siddharth. As the event was underway,Patel distributed money among the performing artists on the stage, which was subsequently followed by others present there.
Government officials, who were also present at the spot, took possession of the video tape of the entire function, which was captured on camera, and handed it over to Parikh. After going through the video,he found Patel had violated the Model Code of Conduct.
Parikh took up the matter with the higher-ups,and then lodged a complaint against him under Section 171/C of the Indian Penal Code.
Patel, meanwhile, maintained innocence, saying the event was not organised by any political party. He said: It was a cultural programme,so I went there. The music and songs of the artists were excellent,so I distributed money among them. I have not violated the Model Code of Conduct,as I did not give speech.
