THE city police on Thursday arrested four Bangladeshi nationals from Surat on charges of illegally staying in India. Police said among the four is the husband of Surat BJPs women wing vice-president Maya Rai.
Acting on a tip-off,the Limbayat police raided a house in Godadra area in the afternoon and asked the four persons, including two women, staying there to show documents to prove their Indian nationality.
The police said when they failed to provide the necessary documents, the four were brought to the police station.
When questioned further, they reportedly admitted that they were Bangladeshi and had been staying in Surat illegally.
Following this, they were put under arrest and sent to the central jail, the police said, adding that all belong to Naogaon district in Bangladesh.
The four were identified as Mohamed Kalam Bhoya, his wife Mili Bhoya his sister Lipi Bhoya and Sukumar Rai,who is reportedly a doctor by profession and runs a clinic at Gayetrinagar society in the same area.
During interrogation, the police learnt that Sukumar is married to Maya Rai,who is reportedly vice-president of the women wing of the city BJP. The police said Sukumar is also an active member of the BJP and has been staying in the city for the last 17-18 years.
The couple has three children.
They said that Kalam and his family members came to Surat one year ago and started working at construction sites.
Last month, the health department had raided his clinic after receiving a complaint. Health officials had demanded his medical certificates, which he failed to show, said police inspector L B Zala.
While Maya could not be contacted,Surat BJP president Purnesh Modi said he did not know if she and Sukumar were members of the party.
We will verify it. If they are found to be members of BJP,we will take strict actions against them, Modi said.
