Former director of MICA, Professor Atul Tandan, passed away on Sunday morning at London Airport following cardiac arrest. Tandan, 67, is survived by wife Priya (67), daughter Karishma (38) and son Samvit (36).
He was heading the MICA between March 2001 and March 2009. An IIT Mumbai and IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, Tandan had a 44-year-long illustrious career, which included 25 years in the industry in various stints, including at Hindustan Lever, Cadbury (India) Bajaj Electricals. and JL Morison (India) at various senior positions.
Tandan was associated with management education since 1984 and worked full-time in academics since 1996. He taught at several institutes in India, the UK, France and Sri Lanka. He was also a model for an all-time famous Lipton tea advertisement. Lately, he had been living in Ahmedabad and spending 15 days a month in Ludhiana, where he held the position of Director for the PGDM programme at PCTE Group of Institutes.
“Having worked with him for three years, I recall him being a great example of a true leader and helped transform the infrastructure, curriculum and employment conditions at MICA and used to also teach strategic brand management, which was his forte,” said UT Rao, Faculty of entrepreneurship at MICA and Chair of MICA incubator.
While the last rites took place in London on Monday as per a release from MICA, the student community and MICA employees gathered at the Mani Ayer Auditorium in the afternoon to pay their respects to him.
A prayer meeting is being planned by the institute on Thursday, March 5 at 4pm at the Ganesh Temple located in MICA campus.
