The Ahmedabad-Vadodara Mahatma Gandhi Expressway (NE1) reported poor visibility caused by fog early on Wednesday morning, prompting authorities to issue the first caution of the season as winter approaches the state.

On Wednesday, the visibility on the 93-km-long expressway ranged between 20 to 100 metres in various parts from early hours to around 10 am, officials said. The least visibility was reported in parts near Vadodara, an official added.

From around 4.30am on Wednesday to 8 am, poor visibility caused slow movement of traffic on NE1, with National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) cautioning drivers to stay safe.

The official told The Indian Express, “It was for the first time in this season that a fog covered NE1 in the morning hours. While the visibility had improved by 8 am, it cleared by around 10 am on Wednesday… As winter sets in, the fog will be frequent and we have begun cautioning drivers to be slow and alert.”

The official added, “We advise drivers to keep their low beam headlights and hazard lights on while also driving at a slow speed as the visibility in some parts was only about 20 metres. Stopping along the Expressway is permitted only in cases of emergency but in such times, it is advised to be extremely cautious while stopping anywhere.”

Another senior official of NHAI told The Indian Express that messages of poor visibility were flashed on the virtual message display boards along the highway boards along with announcements made by the highway patrol team to caution drivers.
