Five children drown in Amreli lake

The incident took place at Vandalia village,some 6 kms south from Babra town.

Five children,three of them siblings,allegedly drowned while swimming in a lake in Babra taluka of Amreli district on Tuesday morning,leaving their parents and villagers shocked.

The incident took place at Vandalia village,some 6 kms south from Babra town. Police said that the five went to Dhobi Talav to take a bath at around 9.30 am. When two of them drifted into deep waters and started drowning,the rest three tried to rescue them in turn but drowned themselves.

The victims have been identified as Nathu Rathod (10),Khoda Rathod (5),Nandu Rathod (3),Pooni Rathod (9) and Bhavesh Parmar (13). Of these,Nathu,Khoda and Nandu were siblings.

“Fire brigade personnel of Amreli and villagers fished out bodies of the five,” Babra mamlatdar Parshuram Adesara said. “The victims’ parents belong to the nomadic Sarania community who travel from village to village and earn their livelihood by repairing old vessels and selling new ones. They are residents of Savarkundla taluka of Amreli and had camped at Vandalia village a couple of days ago. They had set up their tent just 100 metres from the lake and the children had a bath on Monday also,” Adesara further said.

The mamlatdar said that the children were stuck up in the muddy bottom the lake and thus drowned. Babra Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Maheshgiri Gosai said that bodies were fished out by 2 pm and had been sent at government hospital in the town for post mortem.

Incidentally,following heavy rain in the last week of September,most major dams in Saurashtra region had been filled to their capacity.
