Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Director General Paramesh Sivamani said on Monday that the issue of Indian fishermen – particularly from Gujarat – being arrested and sent to prison in Pakistan, was a “grave issue”.

“It is a grave issue that our fishermen get caught by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA). The ICG tries to ensure, through community integration programmes, to educate our fishermen to fish in our waters and remain safe rather than cross over and get arrested,” said Sivamani. He was addressing a press conference after the 23rd meeting of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSAR) at GIFT City in Ahmedabad.
