In three of the four FIRs registered for rioting in Surat on Sunday when the Patidars gave a call for jail bharo, besides community members, as many as 14-non Patidars have been booked for allegedly pelting stones at police, damaging vehicles, CCTV cameras and other public properties.
Patidar-dominated areas like Varachha had witnessed mob violence on Sunday after photographs of injured SPG leader Lalji Patel went viral. Lalji Patel was injured during clashes between Patidar protesters and police in Mehsana. Four complaints of rioting were registered with Surat police following the violence — two with Varachha police station and two with Kapodara police station.
In one of the FIRs at Varachha police station, police identified 38 accused who attacked policemen at Matawadi police chowky by pelting stones. The mob had damaged police vehicles and office furniture, and also tore the documents kept at the chowky.
In connection with this case, police have arrested all the accused, of whom seven were non-Patidars.
In another case rioting and damage to public property, 23 people in a mob of around 1,500 have been identified by Kapodara police. DCP Zone 1 Jagdish Patel said, “We have also arrested non-Patidars for incidents of rioting at Hira Baug circle in Kapodara and in Varachha… They have been found involved in violent activities.”
Patidar Sangh leader Dinesh Navadia said, “We have found that the mob comprised mainly non-Patidars who had taken law in their hands and were involved in the rioting incidents.”
