Firecracker blast stops proceedings at Surat court

Proceedings at the Surat district court came to a halt for some time on Thursday afternoon after a minor blast in a toilet on the second floor of the building at Athwalines.

Proceedings at the Surat district court came to a halt for some time on Thursday afternoon after a minor blast in a toilet on the second floor of the building at Athwalines. Later,it was found to be a firecracker blast. No one was injured in the incident,the police said.

According to the Umra police,the firecracker was kept in a tin box,which also contained nails. Several windowpanes were damaged by the impact of the blast. The second floor houses the courtroom of district principal judge and the room of government pleaders.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Surat Crime Branch,Subhash Trivedi,said: “The blast was triggered by some notorious person to create panic in the court premises. We recovered incense sticks from the spot. Investigation is on to find out who was the last person to enter the toilet.”

D R Patel,the Deputy Commissioner of Police,Zone II,said: “Judgment on a gangrape case is due on Friday,and we suspect that somebody might have done to delay this. Tight security will be in place in the court premises tomorrow to avoid any untoward incident.”
