The Chief Fire Officer,M S Dastoor, has refused to issue the completion certificate of Shahpur Fire Station in view of the less than satisfactory workmanship.
Mayor Kanaji Thakor had inaugurated the fire station on August 16,but complaints have started pouring in within two-and-a-half months.
The fire department has now taken a stand that unless the complaints are properly addressed to,no certificate will be issued. The contractor is given the final payment after the issuance of the completion certificate. Hiren Barot,Assistant Engineer in Dudheshwar ward of Central Zone, had got the work done by a private contractor, who had sub-contracted half the job to Barots brother, sources in the fire department said.
We dont know the antecedents of this sub-contractor,who is the brother of Barot. But all we say is that there is lot to be desired in the workmanship. Walls have started developing cracks even while no fire engines have started docking here, said an official.
Besides, the leakage from the underground water tank has led to seepage in the adjoining walls . The plaster is of poor quality and has started peeling off.
Dastoor, who himself inspected the building, said,There is no question of issuing completion certificate until the problem is solved…it calls for an inquiry.
Besides the fire station, the place also has got new staff quarters. On his part,Hiren Barot denied that was any complaint of fault in the construction work, adding that no sub-contract was given to his brother.
Additional City Engineer Anand Patel said he was unaware of any complaint.
