A fire broke out at the under-construction Sabarmati bullet train station in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad early on Saturday morning during welding work at the site. Workers at the location were immediately evacuated and no injuries or casualties were reported, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 6.30 am when welding work for roof shuttering a part of the station was going on. The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) rushed 14 fire tenders to the spot and brought the fire under control.

The fire broke out on the terrace of the third floor of the station, at a height of approximately 15 metres, officials said. The workers were building the terrace using metal rods (girders), setting up a grid of wooden planks and filling it with construction material mix when the incident occurred.

Officials said primarily, the blaze seems to have been caused when sparks from the welding iron flew into the wooden planks due to strong winds early in the morning.

Fire tenders were initially rushed to the spot from the Sabarmati and Chandkheda fire stations. Later, more fire tenders were brought in from Sahpur, Navrangpura, Maninagar and Jamalpur, AFES officials added.

It took AFES about four hours to control the blaze as it had spread across the top of the under-construction ceiling. “We first stopped the propagation of the fire by conducting external firefighting. We then created two teams and breached the structure to carry out internal firefighting to tackle the main blaze. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident,” said Inayat Shaikh, Divisional Officer.

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) issued a statement, saying “normalcy has been restored” at the site. “Early this morning around 6.30 am, a fire was reported at the roof shuttering of one part of the construction site of the Sabarmati Bullet Train station. No injuries or casualties have been reported. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but prima facie, it appears that welding sparks from temporary shuttering work may have triggered it…NHSRCL officials are on-site, monitoring the situation,” the statement said.

NHSRCL workers attempted to douse the flames using fire extinguishers on site but the blaze was too strong to be controlled, which led them to contact the AFES.
