The Ahmedabad crime branch, while detecting two other cases, arrested a fake crime branch officer on Sunday who allegedly used to pose as crime branch inspector and looted women in the city.

The fake police officer was identified as Prakash Maharaj alias Tino of Surendranagar district. Prakash used to pose as crime branch officer and targeted women on roads and extorted money from them.

The crime branch officials stated that the accused used to don red boots of the officers and carry a baton. He used to then go to the busy market areas and targeted women travelling or walking alone.

In the recent case, he extorted Rs 15,000 and mobile of Rs 1,500 outside Kankaria Lake in Maninagaar and in another Rs 15,000 near AUDA housing in Ramol. He also extorted Rs 10,000 near CTM crossroads and Rs 8,000 near Channakyapuri on the SG Highway.

According to the crime branch, he used to pose as a crime branch officer, check the bags and belongings of the targets and later claim that they had flouted some rule and loot cash, jewellery, etc from the women. The police have seized the baton, boots and other such belongings from the accused and booked him for fraud and loot under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

In the other case, the crime branch arrested Raghvendra Chaudhary, a native of MP, with a country-made revolver worth Rs 20,000 and 11 live cartridges. Raghavendra trades in illegal arms that come to Gujarat from MP and sells them to locals here.
