Acting tough against schools and teachers for the decline in state secondary school results, the state education department, for the first time, served showcause notices to teachers of government and grant-in-aid schools that posted results lower than 30% in the Class X board examinations.

This year’s result was the lowest in the last three years since the board scrapped the merit list system and gave grades to students. This year, the Class X Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) results dropped to 65 per cent from 69 per cent last year.

The notice directed by the commissioner of schools and to be issued by the District Education Officers (DEOs),requires teachers to provide clarification with substantial reasons and serve a reply within a week.

“There were directions to all DEOs from the education department to identify schools and teachers with poor results. The showcause notices will be served on a standard proforma as directed by the department,” said Ahmedabad DEO RI Patel.

The showcause notice clearly mentions to take a legal action under Gujarat Civil Service (Behaviour) Rules 1971 and Gujarat State Service (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1971.

Though the final action against the teachers will be taken by the education department, they will be provided a chance for a hearing at the DEO office on a scheduled date and time to be mentioned in the notice.

Teachers who are given the notice will have to provide details for the poor results not just for the 2012-13 academic session but for the last three years. Also, they will be asked to mention efforts taken for improvement of their students’ result.
