The three accused in police custody
The Vadodara city police late on Sunday arrested three more accused from Ajmer in Rajasthan, including the admin of a purported social media group named “Mafia Gang”, for their role in an alleged attempt to desecrate a Ganesh idol by hurling eggs during a procession on August 26. Police are now investigating if it was planned in advance.
Police had previously arrested two other accused, Sufiyan Mansuri and Shahnawaz Qureshi, and also apprehended a minor for the alleged hurling at the procession undertaken by the Nirmal Park Yuvak Mandal of Manjalpur on the intervening night of Tuesday to bring home the idol for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. The minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Near the city police station, eggs were allegedly hurled from rooftops, allegedly landing on the idol as well as some of the members of the mandal. The organisers had immediately approached the police, leading to an FIR.
On Monday afternoon, police undertook a reconstruction of the crime on the Panigate road.
On Sunday, the Vadodara city police tracked down Junaid Salim Sindhi, Sameer Shaikh, and Anas Mohammad Irshad Qureshi. Sindhi is allegedly the admin of the social media group called Mafia Gang. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IV, Andrew Macwan said that an in-depth probe had been initiated to ascertain the roles played by the three accused as well as the involvement of other possible abettors of the crime.
Macwan said, “Based on the statements of witnesses and those arrested earlier as well as human and technical intelligence, the three accused were traced to Rajasthan. A team of the Vadodara police was immediately dispatched and with the help of the local police in Rajasthan, the accused were nabbed from Ajmer. We cannot reveal, at this moment, the location where they were found… However, an in-depth investigation is on. The three accused will be questioned in detail to ascertain their links to other groups as well as to establish where the accused were planning to escape from Rajasthan.”
The Vadodara city police on Saturday had claimed that investigations showed the accused had “planned” the attack with an intention to “provoke a breach of peace” in the city.
