It was a day of double delight for the family of Aastha and Aashka Mashkaria, the twin sisters who emerged among the toppers in the state when the results of both GSHSEB and GUJCET were declared on Thursday.

The sisters not only got more than 99 percentile in the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET),but also found themselves among the best scorers in Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) exams for Class XII (science).

Born in a family of doctors, the sisters more than made up for what they could not during their Class X exams in which Aashka had secured seventh position in Ahmedabad and 13th in the state while Aastha missed the toppers list by a few marks.

Aashka secured 99.89 percentile while Aastha got 99.47 in the state board results declared today. In GUJCET,Aashka and Aastha got 99.72 and 99.88 percentile, respectively. Aashka, who has an interest in biology, secured 100 marks in physics.

Confident enough of securing their medical seats in B J Medical College in Ahmedabad, the sisters did not even appear for the entrance examination for admission to much sought-after All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Interestingly, their father Mehul Mashkaria,an orthopedic, too had topped in his Class XII board exams. “It is really overwhelming to see my daughters replacing the newspaper cuttings which I have saved all these three decades, when I stood first in Class XII (1983 batch) from the Ahmedabad centre,” he said.

The only tip he used to share with his daughters was time management. His wife Dr Hina Mashkaria is a gynaecologist practising at Chintan Hospital.

Students of C N Vidyalaya School in Ambavadi, the twins not only competed with other students of their class, but even among themselves. “Though a healthy one,” added their father. “Also, since they my daughters,I wanted them to stay closer to home. Thus,I motivated them to clear GUJCET,” he added.

Apart from sharing interests in studies, the twins also have an inclination towards dance.

Both have cleared the Arangnetram, the graduation performance of Bharatnatyam. “Right on the day of our last examination,we started practising for the next stage; parangat,” shared Aashka, the more talkative among the twins.

Preparing for the board and the medical entrance examination (GUJCET) for the last two years, the sisters had to miss out on soaps on TV. “We did not watch television for two years. Though we used to feel bad missing our television serials, today we realise this was worth it,” added Aastha.
