Two civil rights activist moved a public interest petiton in the Gujarat High Court on Friday on the issue of the junior doctors strike at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, seeking directions to the authorities for the implementation of HC directives given in 2006 for providing proper infrastructure and hygienic atmosphere at the hospital and other public places.
Concerned about the issue, the court asked the petitioners to amend the petition to widen its scope and to make the erring government officers amenable to contempt of court proceedings.
The PIL has been moved by Prakash Shah and Ila Pathak from Ahmedabad through their lawyer Amee Yajnik.
Around 5,000 junior doctors at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital campus are on a strike against the authorities for disregarding their long-pending demands for proper accommodation and other issues related to hygiene at the campus. In the last two months, two medicos,a nursing student and an MBBS student, had died of vector-borne diseases at the campus.
Yajnik said that the petitioners had moved the HC over the issue on an urgent basis expressing concerns for patients and doctors at the civil hospital.
The to-be amended petition has been kept for hearing on Monday.
