Dipda Darwaja riot: Verdict likely today

A Mehsana-based special trial court for the 2002 Dipda Darwaja massacre is expected pronounce its judgment in the case on Monday. Eighty-three persons are undergoing trial in the case,including former BJP MLA Prahlad Gosa.

Mehsana Principal District Judge Swarnlata Srivastava has conducted trial in the case and has fixed July 30 as the date for pronouncement of judgment.

Judge Srivastava had also conducted trial in the Sardarpura massacre case.

Eleven persons,including four children and five women who were staying at the Chudi Vas locality of Visnagar town near Dipda Darwaja,were killed by a mob on February 28,2002. The bodies of none of the deceased could be recovered and they were identified only from the flesh pieces and ornaments found at the massacre site.

The case is one of the nine Godhra and post-Godhra riots that were handed over to the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team for further investigation.

Among the accused is then president of Visnagar Municipality Dahya Patel.

While three women are facing charges of abetment,the first investigation officer of the case,M K Patel,has been arraigned as accused for criminal negligence and conspiracy along with other charges.

Most of the accused belong to the economically and politically powerful Patel community.
