Four members of a jobless diamond workers family attempted suicide by consuming poison in Bhavnagar district on Monday. A passer by who spotted the four lying in an unconscious state on the stretch of road between Khundeli village and Bhavnagar, rushed them to the hospital where the condition of the four is stated to be out of danger.
The Bhavnagar police said that four persons: Gema Chauhan (27),his wife Geeta (25) and their two sons Kanji (5) and Ketan (4) were brought to Bhavnagar Sir T Hospital on Monday night. Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple took the extreme step under acute financial crisis, which was an outcome of Chauhan losing his job some six months ago.
The police said the family had gone to the nearby Kundeli village to visit Geetas parents on Sunday. The couple,on their way back to Bhavnagar on a motorbike, halted at a roadside farm. The couple first made their two sons consume poison and then drank it themselves.
On regaining consciousness in hospital,Chauhan,in his statement to the police, said he used to work as a diamond polisher. He lost the job when several units did not reopen post the Diwali break. He said he has taken up odd jobs as a labourer in the past two months, which have, however, failed to provide him with a decent standard of living. He also told the police he and his wife had jointly taken the decision to commit suicide.
