“Approval has been given for the work after the tendering process, which will be completed in the near future. The nearly 16-year-old lake is spread over an area of 525 hectares, and the state government is carrying out this work to restore it to its original condition by desilting and r-modelling 17 to 18 percent of it,” the minister further apprised the House.
Bavaliya said that through the Kanewal Lake, drinking water is provided to 1,987 surrounding villages and for irrigation in an area of 1,436 hectares. “Apart from this, water is provided to nine cities including Ahmedabad. Along with desilting the Kanewal Lake, work will be done to strengthen the embankment, prepare a wall around it, build paver blocks on the upper side, and a road,” he added.
Further, the minister stated that Wadhwan, Muli and Sayla areas of Surendranagar district will be benefited by the SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation) scheme of the state government.
This will benefit 38 villages of Wadhwan, Muli and Sayla talukas of Surendranagar; the tender process for this has also been completed. Apart from this, 11 villages of Halvad taluka in Surendranagar have been provided water under this scheme. Work orders worth Rs 41 crore have been given.
