The tank was lifted using crane and a JCB machine.
An over 70-year-old overhead tank with a 15-litre capacity was on Thursday brought down in Sarangpur area of old Ahmedabad after it was declared unsafe due to its dilapidated condition in August 2025. The water tank was lifted using a heavy duty crane and a JCB machine.
“Using a 200 tonne capacity crane, the JCB machine was pulled overnight on the water tank. The tank demolition is almost done and will be followed by the demolition of pillars in the next two days,” deputy municipal commissioner Ramya Bhatt told The Indian Express.
Bhatt said, “The water supply was stopped in the month of October and alternate water supply arrangements were made by the civic body. Normally, the dilapidated overhead water tanks are brought down simply by breaking the pillar, but in this case, looking at its placement with roads on all three sides.”
Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said a new overhead water tank will be constructed behind this existing one.
