A day after violent clash between police and local residents in the communally sensitive Shahpur locality in Ahmedabad, the death of a 22-year-old youth has escalated tension in the area on Monday. The youngster had reportedly sustained bullet injuries during the clash and was admitted in VS hospital. He was on the ventilator and succumbed to his injuries early in the morning.
According to police Ashraf Pathan, a resident of Shahpur, sustained bullet injuries during the clash on Sunday late in the evening. Police said that it was a private firing in which the country-made pistol was used. Police have said that the bullet that was used is also made of aluminium and not of standard copper which is used by the police. However, Pathan’s family has said otherwise and demanded forensic test.
Senior police officials said that the funeral procession of Pathan will be taken out in the evening for which heavy police bandobast have been placed across Kalupur, Relief road, Shahpur and Mirzapura areas. Since the morning the local market remained closed till noon. Meanwhile, a camera person of a local TV channel was roughed up by the security personnel at VS hospital where Ashraf died.
On Sunday evening a major clash had erupted between police and locals at Rangila Chowky near Patharwali Masjid when a team of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) officials went to nab a suspected involved in animal slaughtering case. The police action was protested by the locals who pelted stones at the policemen in which many sustained injuries. The violent mob snatched a service revolver from a sub-inspector who was also beaten up. On Friday night as well a police team was attacked after it apprehended a group of eight persons for ferrying calves in Mirzapur.
