Daman and Diu MP Umesh Patel
Kicking up a row on New Year’s eve, Daman and Diu MP Umesh Patel accused the Gujarat Police of harassing tourists coming to Daman for celebrations on New Year’s night.
In a video message, which has since gone viral on social media across South Gujarat, Patel alleged that in the past five to seven years, the tourists of Daman have been intentionally harassed by Gujarat police on their return from New Year night celebrations.
“The tourists are being caught by Gujarat police and put in jails. Due to such action of Gujarat police, the Daman tourism and businessmen are affected,” the MP stated in the video.
Welcoming Gujarat tourists to the Union Territory, Patel urged visitors to stay back in Daman instead of returning to Gujarat in a drunken state. He also assured them to provide accommodation at Koli community hall, if required.
“I have shared the video message to ensure the safety of Gujarat tourists visiting Daman. We want that such tourists should not be harassed by Gujarat police while they are returning back to Gujarat from Daman after New Year celebrations. We have also made an accommodation facility at night for those who want to stay back in Daman,” Patel said.
Attempts to contact Gujarat police on the MP’s remarks did not elicit a response.
Questioning the working style of Gujarat police, Patel said “everybody knows the liquor reaches Gujarat from Daman. The liquor is easily available in Gujarat in comparison to Daman”.
He also requested tourists to not bring a liquor-consuming driver to Daman for “safety reasons”.
In the video, Patel appealed to Gujarat Police to take action against a car driver if he is found drunk and not to harass the passengers. “If drivers are not drunk, then also passengers should not be harassed. The tourists coming to Daman pay taxes on the items they purchase and the taxes reach the Central government,” he said.
